Carlson, however, did reference a video which is known to exist of Miller and Tapper sparring after the segment ended during the commercial break, partial transcripts of which were leaked online Monday.

Miller appeared on Tapper's "State of the Union" program Sunday morning to defend the president from charges of dysfunction in the White House leveled in the new book by Michael Wolff, "Fire and Fury".

The picture painted by the book, said Mr Miller, "is so contrary to reality, to the experience of those who work with him (Mr Trump)". "Is the president really arguing that Steve Bannon had nothing to do with him or the presidency?" Now, Bannon's out of favor, and Miller is tearing him apart. He also lauded Trump as a "political genius".

"You worked hand in glove with Steve Bannon in the White House and on the campaign", Tapper asked.

"I have plenty of questions on immigration - you've attempted to filibuster by talking about your flights with the president", Tapper said.

In the predictable finale to Sunday's debacle, Miller sat down with Fox News' Tucker Carlson on Monday night to deny the most embarrassing element of the story - that he was escorted off set - and to continue trashing CNN. "After refusing to leave, he was escorted out by security".

As the interview progressed, Miller talked at length about experiences on the campaign trail, his perceptions of the president, CNN's negative coverage of the president and Tapper's inability to relate to working class people.

"I think I've wasted enough of my viewers' time", Tapper said.

While Trump had a decidedly different view of the segment, many Twitter users applauded Tapper's decision to pull the plug on Miller.
