David is also charged with lewd act on a child under 14 by force or fear.

VIDEO: Mom of 13 allegedly held captive in Perris home was "perplexed" by arrival of deputiesDavid Turpin's father, James, the children's grandfather, said from his home in Princeton, West Virginia, that he did not believe the reports about the abuse.

"I will tell you as a prosecutor, there are cases that stick with you, they haunt you", Hestrin said.

It's alleged children were allowed to shower just once per year and fed once a day. The Turpin children - who range in ages 2 to 29 - were subjected to repeated beatings, including strangulation, and were only allowed to shower once a year, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said a press conference on Thursday. Responding officers said the teen was slightly emaciated and "appeared to be only 10 years old". Their disgusting rap sheet of charges includes: 12 counts of torture, 12 counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, and six counts of child abuse or neglect.

"We would not say abuse is more common among home-schoolers, but when it does occur, there are fewer safeguards, less to stop it from spinning out of control", said executive director Rachel Coleman.

Hestrin said the only entertainment the children had was writing in journals and authorities had recovered hundreds of journals which are being checked for evidence of how the siblings lived.

Numerous photos on the couple's Facebook page show the children dancing at the Elvis Chapel, visiting an amusement park that appears to be Disneyland and going on other outings, always looking thin but often smiling.

"I feel they were model Christians", she said.

Their depraved parents allowed them to do only one thing, prosecutors said. Once in a while they were fastened for a considerable length of time at once as discipline, Hestrin said. A 29-year-old woman weighs 82 pounds, and a 12-year-old weighs as much as an average 7-year-old, a prosecutor said.

David Allen Turpin and his wife, Louise Anna Turpin, were arrested Sunday after authorities found the malnourished children in their home in the Los Angeles suburb.

Louise Anna Turpin of Perris, Calif., appears January 19, 2018, in court with her lawyer in Riverside, Calif. They are each being held on US$13 million bail and deny all charges. "I called the place the compound", Shelly Vinyard, a former neighbor said.

The motives behind David and Louise Turpin's decision to lock their children up and starve them remain unclear to authorities. The victims could suffer from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, which results from trauma that took place over a long period of time or in captivity, said Dr. James Turpin said that he knew nothing about the case beyond what he had seen in the media.

The process to terminate parental rights is determined in dependency court, and birth parents have the right to contest the termination, she said.
