"There were reasons for them to quit - there were reasons for them to say, 'I've had enough, '" said Desjardins, who has worked closely with team GM Sean Burke to select a squad featuring players like Ben Scrivens, Rene Bourque, Brandon Kozun, Mason Raymond and Derek Roy.

"We'll have a hard-working, competitive team", said Hockey Canada VP Scott Salmond, who helped Burke and assistant GM Martin Brodeur pick the roster along with assistants Dave King, Scott Walker and Craig Woodcroft. Poulin appeared in 50 games for the New York Islanders over a five-year span, and now plays in the Austrian Hockey League.

Canada's head coach Willie Desjardins also hails from Climax, Sask.

Those players are a long way from the likes of Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith, two current Hawks who were Olympic mainstays until the National Hockey League decided not to participate in the 2018 Games. He also played in a Finnish league and was in the AHL for six full seasons playing for the Portland Pirates, Rochester Americans, Hershey Bears and Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

"This team will make Canada proud, it will be a gold medal effort and there won't be one guy that puts that jersey on that this isn't the highlight of their hockey career".

"I said, 'that's going to be easy, because we all have the same goal.' And we have it again".

And while having current college players on the Women's National Team for the Olympics is no unusual feat, the Team USA Men have not had a current NCAA student-athlete on the team since the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

The KHL, regarded as the world's second-best league next to the NHL, has not said whether it will release players for the Olympics, a delay caused by the International Olympic Committee's decision to ban Russian Federation from competing in the 2018 Games.

Thirteen players come from the KHL, four from the Swiss league, three each from Sweden and the AHL, and one from Germany and Austria.

"Honestly, when I first got invited to one of the camps I thought, my goodness, they're actually considering me", Howden said.

After the International Olympic Committee opened its doors to the NHL at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, Canada has re-exerted its status as ice hockey's super power by taking gold in 2002, 2010 and 2014 but returning home empty-handed in 1998 and 2006. "And I just wanted to do everything I could to be a part of that team".

The 12-nation men's hockey tournament at the 2018 Games goes from February 14-25 at the Gangneung Hockey Centre and the Kwandong Hockey Centre.

The OAR team has not been announced, but the players chosen will have to prove they are clean in order to be eligible in PyeongChang.

Training camp starts January 28 in Latvia. "I think these players are going to be motivated to play the best hockey they can - to be seen on that stage".

"It was a pretty special moment", Quinton said.
