A fire at Nottingham rail station is causing disruption to train services across the UK.

Crews were still at the scene by late afternoon, and a joint investigation by Nottinghamshire fire and rescue and British transport police is ongoing.

East Midlands tweeted: 'Please do not travel to Nottingham station this morning as trains will be unable to run and we are unable to provide road transport to/from the station'.

He said crews were still inside and trying to contain the fire between the new part of the station and the main building, describing the operation as "difficult and protracted".

Unfortunately the fire is spreading to the roof void and is now travelling across the concourse area across the main line into Nottingham train station.

"At present the station has been evacuated and the fire services are on site".

There are also rail replacement buses being put on from stations such as Grantham and East Midlands Parkway to take customers into Nottingham.

The station has recently undergone a £50m redevelopment, incorporating a new tram bridge, including the restoration and upgrade of its Edwardian grade II-listed front building.

Asked about potential disruptions for weekend football fans, Kirsty Derry, deputy managing director of East Midlands Trains, said: "We have got people working through the clock to make sure we get a really good level of service". She said there were no reported casualties.

"Even if some trains are running by tomorrow, there will be an extremely limited service with many delays, cancellations and overcrowding".

"It was pretty frightening to see how quickly a fire can grow".

Dozens of commuters waited outside as emergency crews closed several surrounding streets. Service are expected to be disrupted for the rest of today.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "The roads around Nottingham Railway Station have been closed because of a fire at the station".

"That is because the fire is burning continuously through voids, which puts it out of sight and makes it incredibly hard for us to locate".
