Annual wreath ceremony honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

In the past, the city's official Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration and parade took place near the steps of City Hall.

The event is being sponsored by the Grant Chapel AME Church and will begin at 8 the Marriiott Pyramid North Hotel. The service will take place at 7:30 p.m. Temple Beth El is located at 2419 Kennedy Blvd.

During the signing Trump, accompanied by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and King's nephew Isaac Newton Farris in the White House, praised the civil rights icon's "faith and love for humanity". United Blood Services will have a blood drive Monday from 11 a.m. -3 p.m., at the Aquaplex, 1702 N. Fourth St.

At 6 p.m., the Ministerial Alliance of Reidsville and Vicinity will host a unity service at West End Baptist Church at 805 Vance St., Reidsville.

55 years ago Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his now famous "I Have A Dream Speech".

Keynote speaker is Champaign County Regional Planning Commissioner Dalitso Samson Sulamoyo, who was born and raised in Malawi, Sulamoyo, and moved to the United States to pursue higher education and escape poverty that ravaged his homeland.

The free event will be held at the cathedral, located at 3101 Wisconsin Ave., NW, and will feature live performances from the Children of the Gospel, the Howard University Choir, the Washington National Cathedral house band, and other artists.

The RCEF asks that people who are interested register for the event. In addition, there will be several youth presenters from various area congregations.
