Amazon releases finalist cities for second headquarters, including LA

Amazon evaluated each proposal based on the criteria outlined in its RFP to create the list of 20 candidates that will continue in the selection process.

Unless one of the cities listed below is Amazon's codename for Cleveland, the Forest City is out of the running as the location for the company's second headquarters. In addition to Amazon's direct hiring and investment, construction and operation of HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community. Miami was named one of those picked to move on to the next phase, joining cities that include Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and NY among others. "We are ready to show the company why we believe the Chicago area is their best option".

Amazon received 239 proposals from cities across the USA, including Birmingham and Huntsville.

The company, which employes over 540,000 people worldwide, expects to make a decision sometime this year. Over the past five years, Amazon has invested more than $100 billion in the USA, including corporate offices, development and research centers, fulfillment infrastructure, and compensation to its teams.

Chicago recruited "Star Trek" actor William Shatner to help narrate a video pitch in hopes of getting the attention of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, a devoted Trekkie.

Some state and local governments have shared details of the financial incentives they are dangling.
