Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus smartphones launched in China

The highlight of the both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus is that it comes with 18:9 aspect ratio for an immersive media and gaming experience.

According to the teasers and promo videos, the larger Redmi 5 Plus is expected to sport narrower bezels than the Redmi 5.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has started selling Redmi 5A online for an introductory price of Rs 4999 (approx $77) in India. Both variants have fingerprint sensors on the back, where the single 12MP primary camera is set too. The phones will come in Blue, Gold, Rose Gold, and Black color variants. It comes in 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage models.

These are definitely affordable phones by global standards, then, with the 5 Plus sounding like particularly good value. The 18:9 narrow-bezel display first featured on flagship smartphones and slowly trickled down to midrange models by the fourth quarter of 2017.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is a bit more powerful than the regular version but shares the same appearance.

Both the devices run Android 7.0 Nougat with Xiaomi's custom MIUI 9 on top. The base model of the Redmi 5 Plus has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and it costs 999 Yuan (~$151). The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus look exactly as the leaked images suggested they will look like.

The Redmi 5, for its part, packs a 5.7-inch HD+ LCD display with a resolution of 1440 x 720 and an aspect ratio of 18:9. Additionally, both devices are powered by different processors since the lower-end Redmi 5 comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 as opposed to Redmi 5 Plus' Snapdragon 625. The users can either choose to go with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage for $150 or with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for $195. The battery is 3,300 mAh. In the list of specs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 includes 6 GB RAM, 64 GB ROM, camera 5 and 12 megapixels and battery capacity of 3400 mAh. Besides, the smartphone offers Dual SIM, 4G LTE, WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and a micro USB port. There's a newer sensor for the rear-facing camera and a front-facing flash for selfies. The phones have an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyro, hall sensor, and a proximity sensor. It's worth mentioning that an expandable MicroSD card slot is also present and can be expanded up to 128GB.
