Truck drivers required to use electronic logs by December 18

Reduced driver hours are a possible result of the HOS and ELD, the experts say, although the rules aren't changing as a result of the ELD, only the way hours are recorded. They also have been proven susceptible to hacking by the University of MI researchers, which is concerning to them since the device is hooked into the truck's engines, braking system and instrument panel.

These will include a 90-day temporary waiver from the ELD requirement for transporters of agricultural commodities, formal guidance specifically pertaining to the existing Hours-of-Service exemption for the agricultural industry and guidance on the "personal conveyance" provision.

So... If you work within the limits of the law then an ELD is not an issue.

Harris bobtailed in with his company Kenworth T660, meeting owner-operator David Floyd of Collinwood, Tenn.

"They don't want you to stop and take a nap", said Brad Christianson "They just want you to go, go, go".

There were demonstrations across the nation and in Kansas, as truckers protested a federal mandate becoming effective later this month.

"Best thing about it is it keeps me safe, and it keeps a lot of drivers with my company safe, and it keeps drivers of the world safe", Buckner said. "I'm projected to lose about $50,000 next year, if this trend continues".

The ELD rule will cull the trucker population, Lucas predicted.

Independent truckers from around the country gathered today to bring attention to the new technology mandate that could leave consumers paying more at the grocery store.

Valenti agrees. "I am a Trump supporter, but I kind of feel he has turned his back on the people who helped him get into the office".

But beyond those concerns and anticipated increased time away from their homes and families that it will cost them, the truckers' underlying gripe is the restrictions on their hours of service in which they can work which were put in place in 2003 and slightly modified in 2013. "All of this data is coming out after the mandate starts". One issue with paper logs is that they can be falsified.

Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earn a median salary of $19.26 an hour, according to the list.

"With manufacturers of ELDs now responsible for "self-certifying" their compliance with government standards, with no effective procedures seemingly yet developed to provide oversight over such "self-certifying", drivers and operators are left without any way of ascertaining which brands and models of devices ultimately will pass muster", said Hill.

The devices would cost on average $2 billion in compliance costs, which is a disproportionate number for small businesses. Monday's local rally was one of 40 rallies from around the country.
