Shashi Kapoor passes away at 79 after prolonged illness

The Padma Bhushan awardee actor was 79 years old (birthday - 18 March 1938) and had been unwell since the past few years.

"Yes he has passed away".

"Shashi Kapoor expired at 5:20 pm on December 4 at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai", PTI quoted Dr Ram Narain from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. "He had kidney problems". The veteran actor was given a state funeral, which was held amid massive security. Actor Randhir Kapoor, son of veteran actor Raj Kapoor, confirmed the news.

Kapoor acted in more than 100 Hindi films.

He took on the name "Shashiraj" for his roles in commercial films back in the 40s, instead of using his own name because there was another Shashi Kapoor, a child artiste, who was best known for his roles in mythological films.

He debuted as a leading man in Dharmputra in 1961, and his most memorable roles were in such films as Jab Jab Phool Khile (Whenever The Flowers Bloom, 1965), Kabhi Kabhie (Sometimes, 1976), and Kalyug (Age of Downfall, 1981).

Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Ranbir Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Abhishek Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Supriya Pathak, Shakti Kapoor and Suresh Oberoi among others were present at the cremation. By July 1958, Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal had got married after facing initial resistance from Jennifer's family.

Zakir Hussain flies down to perform at least once a year in Jennifer Kendal Kapoor's memory. In 2015, he was honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award making him the third member of the Kapoor clan after Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor to receive the highest award in Indian Cinema.
