Lionel Messi has hinted that he may retire from worldwide football if he and his Argentina team-mates have an unsuccessful 2018 World Cup.

In both the Champions League ties with Juventus and Sporting CP, the Argentine initially started on the bench and he insists that he's happy with that.

'Mascherano? I'm not going to tell you what he told me, but I'll understand if he leaves, he wants to play more, ' Messi added.

The Barcelona legend said he would never play for his country again after their 2016 Copa America final loss to Chile, but he made a U-turn just two months later.

People get exhausted and want to see new faces and new things in the National Team.

He subsequently reversed his decision and will be the linchpin of a talented Argentina side as they aim to win the World Cup next year.

"If they have the day, they make 4 goals, and if not, you can enter everywhere and they leave you unthinkable situations in a match".

The Argentine worldwide footballer will now play for Barca until 2021. "It messes up a lot, we hope we find them from the first time".

However, the 30-year-old made a U-turn on that decision just two months later and he played a pivotal role in helping La Albiceleste automatically qualify for the major event in Russian Federation next year. The South Americans lost 4-2 despite leading by 2-0.
