It is powered by a VC-Turbo engine, which is claimed to be the world's first production-ready variable compression ratio engine.

The QX50 will also arrive with an array of new-to-Infiniti safety tech, courtesy of parent brand Nissan.

It combines the power of a 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline engine with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine. Through the use of a complex linkage for its pistons, a computer is able to change the engine's compression ratio on the fly from 8:1 to 14:1 to optimize its performance and efficiency as needed.

Christian Meunier, Infiniti Global Division vice president, described the QX50 as a luxury crossover with cutting edge technologies, standout design and unrivaled interior space, riding on an entirely new platform. The front-wheel-drive QX50 is slightly slower at 6.7 seconds.

The groundbreaking new powertrain performs like a diesel auto but with a lot less harmful emissions than those vehicles.

Top speed for both is 143mph and Infiniti says the performance is comparable to that of its previous V6 engine but much more refined and quieter and with better economy.

It boasts a version of Nissan's ProPILOT Assist technologies, which allow it to basically go semi-autonomous during highway driving.

The QX50 is now equipped with ProPILOT Assist Technologies that adds a number of convenience and active safety features that include: Direct Adaptive Steering and Intelligent Cruise Control; Distance Control Assist; Back-up Collision Intervention; Predictive Forward Collision Warning; Blind Spot Warning and Intervention; Lane Departure Warning and Prevention; and Forward Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection.

The all-new platform is made up of SHF (Super High Formability) high-tensile steel that has helped increase the torsional rigidity by 23 per cent.

Christian Meunier, Infiniti global division vice president, said:"The QX50 is the most important vehicle we have ever launched, and it embodies everything the brand stands for: attractive design, advanced technology and empowering performance".

"As a luxury mid-size crossover, it's the right vehicle at the right time in one of the world's fastest growing segments".
