Officers searched three homes and a community centre in Sheffield and another house in Chesterfield yesterday in a pre-planned counter terrorism operation.

West Yorkshire police in England arrested four men early this morning on suspicion of plotting a terror attack, authorities said.

The men, aged 22 to 41, were questioned at a police station.

He was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of material containing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, the Metropolitan Police said.

People living near an address in the Meersbrook area of Sheffield said they were woken at around 5.30am.

Neighbours of the Chesterfield property and local shopkeepers were evacuated to the nearby Proact Stadium football ground and the area was cordoned off.

"We recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of this activity".

"We'd ask that people are calm, resilient and measured in what they say and how they act during what is a hard and concerning time for local communities".

"The public may have heard a loud bang at the time as police entered one of the properties, but it was not an explosion", she said.

"I pulled the curtains and saw lots of armed men in the street, so I kept watching because that was quite extraordinary".

However, please be reassured; the arrest we wanted to make has been made.

"We have a detailed understanding of all our events, shows, sporting fixtures, markets, attractions and seasonally busy places, and it's in these places that you will see armed and unarmed staff".
