It was a year in which nearly every sector of society was mashed together or clashing on social media, with the "Tweeter in Chief", President Donald Trump, leading the way.

It came from fast food lover Carter Wilkerson, who, on a quest for a year's worth of free chicken nuggets, pleaded with the world to retweet: "HELP ME PLEASE". The top ten list of most retweeted tweets has been released, and three of former President Barack Obama's posts have made the list.

Obama would make the top nine most retweets two additional times while current President Donald Trump did not make this specific list.

Wendy's told the teen that it would take 18 million retweets for him to get free "nuggs." .

Following that trend, Twitter looked back at some of the most popular tweets of the year.

On the day of clashes at a white supremacist protest in Virginia, Mr Obama posted a photo of himself talking to multi-racial children through a window.

The tweeter-in-chief's missives weren't among the top 10 most shared or liked, according to the list.

A tweet in which the former president appealed to Americans to "believe in [their] ability to create change" was the fifth most-shared globally.

Ariana Grande's tweet after the Manchester Arena bombing in May was the fourth most retweeted globally.

As 2017 winds down, President Donald Trump continues to make headlines via his active Twitter account on a near-daily basis.

With the media in Trump's crosshairs, it was also in the sights of Twitter users.

Despite this, Mr Trump was both the most talked-about politician in the United States and worldwide.
