As Cyclone Ockhi moves closer to Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi cancels rallies

Meanwhile, Mumbai Disaster Management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an advisory against visiting the beaches today and tomorrow, as the cyclone is expected to hit the coast of Maharashtra within the next 48 hours.

"Precautionary holiday declared on 5/12/17 for schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Sindhudurg, Thane, Raigad and Palghar Districts for the safety of the students due to the serious weather predictions on #CycloneOckhi #MumbaiRains", tweeted state Education Minister Vinod Tawde.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured the nation that the government is continously monitoring the situation arising in various parts of the country due to Cyclone Ockhi.

Modi was set to address the public rally at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Surat goes to polls on Saturday in the first phase of the elections. "The intensity of rains will increase as the cyclone approaches", the official said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert Monday, warning fishermen against venturing into the sea as coastal areas are likely to experience strong winds. Former Congress strongman Shankersinh Vaghela, who floated his Jan Vikalp front, was also forced to cancel his roadshows and rallies that were to be held in Junagadh, and Mahuva and Palitana towns of Saurashtra, a leader of his outfit said.

The BJP has also called off rallies and press conferences of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Surat on Tuesday, a party leader said.

As Cyclone Ockhi threatened the Gujarat coast on Tuesday, more than 5,000 people were shifted to safer locations and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams deployed in vulnerable places.
