Van Dijk, who has made 12 appearances for Southampton this season, was dropped by Pellegrino for Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.

"I left him and others out because I wanted fresh players after playing so many games in a few days. I can have my opinion and this I have give to the technical director, to the chairman, my opinion", he told reporters.

Pellegrino insisted the former Celtic defender remained a key member of the squad after he started the previous 11 games, but would not rule out a move when the winter transfer window opens next month.

One of those positions is at centre-back. the Gunners have conceded 20 goals in the Premier League this season, the same as Liverpool and more than the rest of the top seven.
