Apple reveals 2017's best apps, games, movies, music and more

Roughly a week after Google revealed the Android Play Store's top apps of the year, Apple has done the same, showcasing which of this year's most popular apps, music, movies, podcasts, and books have topped iOS users' lists in 2017.

Moving on to the best games of the year, Splitter Critters took home the title on the iPhone, while The Witness came out on top on the iPad.

Apple also announced the biggest trends of 2017 and the most popular apps, music, movies and more.

Super Mario Run tops the most downloaded games chart, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies and Subway Surfers.

Finally, iTunes U saw a bumper year, with computer science courses being amongst the most popular, with the top three apps focusing on learning to code and developing apps - certainly a handy thing for iTunes to teach users.

The top free iPhone apps of the year included lots of usual suspects: Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Netflix, Spotify, and Uber.

Snap may have had a rough year, but you wouldn't know it from the App Store charts.

This year, Apple has also introduced a new year-end section for the "trends of the year". The $2.99 game features a new augmented-reality mode. Apple said Taylor Swift's new album Reputation has already reached No. 3 on the 2017 United States top album chart, an impressive feat considering it was just released on November 10. "Game of Thrones" unsurprisingly dominated the iTunes TV charts, followed by "The Walking Dead", HBO's "Big Little Lies", NBC's "This Is Us", PBS's "Victoria" and FX's "The Americans".
