Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose Dubai drama

Spain's Jon Rahm won the DP World Tour Championship as Justin Rose's dramatic late collapse saw Tommy Fleetwood crowned European number one.

Instead, a modest final-round 74 for Fleetwood in Dubai was enough to finish top of the pile and earn him a big cash prize, contributing to what he describes as "the best year" of his life.

Ireland's Shane Lowry (63) and Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat (67) were tied for the second place at 18-under par, while Masters champion Sergio Garcia (65) and the South African duo of Dean Burmester (68) and Dylan Frittelli (69) were tied fourth at 271 alongside Rose.

A win by either Rose, second in the points standings before the tournament, or leader Fleetwood would have guaranteed them the Race to Dubai title and a $1.25 million bonus.

He seized the initiative to top the projected Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex after day one but a bogey on the last in his second round meant Fleetwood was back in the ascendancy heading into the weekend.

Fleetwood has recovered bravely from an opening 73 with consecutive rounds of 65 and yesterday's effort included eight birdies in his last 11 holes. Lee Westwood (2009), McIlroy (2012, 2015) and Stenson (2013) are the only players to win the DP World Tour Championship and claim the Race to Dubai title.

"I made some great pars on 15 and 16 and it's always hard because it really was out of my control and down the last few holes I just had to keep it in and try and do the best I could".

Rose was left scratching his head after the finish after playing brilliant golf for three-and-half days.

"I'm happy for Tommy".

It's not like I played bad. "He's been leading all year and it's good for him to finish it off".

Rose led the tournament by a shot with seven holes to play, only to bogey three of the next five.

The 23-year-old Spaniard said: "I think more than proving to anybody else, it's proving to myself that I belong here".
