Tesla just unveiled its latest model, the Tesla Semi electric truck and it's already getting orders.

"The Tesla Semi will deliver a far better experience for truck drivers, while increasing safety and significantly reducing the cost of cargo transport", Musk said.

The Tesla Semi can pull the max allowable payload of 80,000 pounds over a distance of 500 miles at highway speeds on one charge even if it's fully loaded.

Chief Executive Officer of Tesla Inc, Elon Musk said the semi is fit for voyaging 500 miles (804km) on an electric charge.

Megachargers, a new high-speed DC charging solution, will add about 400 miles in 30 minutes and can be installed at origin or destination points and along heavily trafficked routes, enabling recharging during loading, unloading, and the ideal opportunity for drivers to grab coffee and a doughnut during breaks.

"So it means you can go to your destination and back without recharging", he said.

So, clearly, there are notable limits to Tesla's semi trucks as of now, but obviously major benefits as well - greatly reduced emissions being an important one.

Another innovation is the cab's design: the driver's seat is positioned in the center instead of to the side.

Instead of the traditional console, there are touch screens for navigation, music and traffic data.

The inside has enough head and legroom to stand up and walk around in. It also has a system that automatically keeps the vehicle in its lane.

Tesla declined to identify any other Canadian buyers for the truck that it says can go from zero to 100 kph in five seconds without a trailer, compared to 15 seconds for a comparable diesel truck.

Lindland added however that Musk "is not great at keeping deadlines" and that "we need to add weeks, months or years" to his timetable.

As non-renewable energy sources as getting more costly, it's time to replace petrol/diesel vehicle with electric vehicles.

The money will help a lot as Tesla figures out how to ramp up Model 3 production. The vehicle was presented in Los Angeles by Elon Musk with the company's first electric truck. About 260,000 Class-8 trucks are produced in North America annually, and that market has a value of about $28.6 billion, said Don Ake, vice president of commercial vehicles at FTR, an industry economics research firm. Vetr raised shares of Tesla from a "buy" rating to a "strong-buy" rating and set a $374.78 target price on the stock in a research note on Thursday, July 27th. Walmart has already ordered 15 Tesla Semi trucks, which will be used in the U.S. and Canada. Most notably for truck drivers and other travelers on the road, it climbs 5% grades at a steady 65 miles per hour, whereas a diesel truck maxes out at 45 miles per hour on a 5% grade. Tesla is working on a pickup truck and a lower-cost SUV and negotiating a new factory in China.
