Before the game, Goodwin was one of three players who took a knee during the national anthem.

"Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4 a.m", Marquise wrote on Instagram. The baby was born premature and died early Sunday morning after complications, KTVU reported.

Morgan also spoke on the "tragic experience" in an Instagram post, letting her followers know the couple "won't stop fighting and we won't give up on what God has in store for us".

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin played with a heavy heart Sunday against the New York Giants hours after losing his newborn baby.

The 49ers went on to defeat the Giants 31-21 to earn their first win of the season.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Goodwin left the locker room quickly to be with his family following the game.

Current and former National Football League players shared their sadness at the news and sent condolences to the Goodwins. Morgan Goodwin, nee Snow, is an accomplished athlete in her own right; at the University of Texas, where the two met, was a nine-time All-American hurdler and sprinter, and was the 2012 World Junior Champion in the 100 meter hurdles.

"I just wanna thank those who've genuinely prayed for [wife Morgan Goodwin] & myself throughout this pregnancy", Goodwin began.

"Please pray for the Goodwin family", he added. "This was truly and an unbelievable experience and it was also a tragic experience", she wrote.
