Elliott kept his cool at Texas but with his spot in the title race on the line, Elliott tagged Hamlin, then passed Matt Kenseth for the lead with just under 40 laps to go.

Kenseth passed Chase Elliott with 10 laps left in the 312-lap Can-Am 500 and was able to hold on for what could easily be his final career win.

35 laps to go: Denny Hamlin's chances of advancing go up in smoke as his tire blows and his vehicle slams the wall. Elliott could have advanced to the final round for a victory but ended in second place. Scalding hot brake rotors from Chris Buescher's vehicle flew in between the SAFER barriers on the outside wall as Buescher had a mechanical failure that caused an accident. Elliott took the lead shortly after Hamlin's blown tire and pulled away from Kenseth. Elliott would hang on to finish runner-up for his seventh runner-up finish of the season. The Manchester High School graduate would advance with a victory Sunday or by finishing in the points standings ahead of Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson.

The Kenseth win salvaged the day for Gibbs, which had a chance to get Denny Hamlin into the championship until his feud with Elliott cost him the chance.

There was always going to be one delighted driver and four jealous ones when Sunday's playoff cutdown race finished, but now we know who falls into which category.

Hamlin erased all of Keselowski's points lead following the second stage.

Hamlin leads in the final 100 laps, though the cars have not yet pitted in the final segment. Blaney finished the stage in 13th.

Jimmie Johnson also wrecked early in the race, ending his bid to make the championship.

The final 50 laps of Sunday's race were, uh, a bit wild and set up by a insane moment.

The Manchester High School graduate finished second to Kyle Larson in the opening stage, earning nine bonus points. A win would lock him into the championship race automatically.
