Messi was in action for Argentina in Saturday's 1-0 win over 2018 World Cup hosts Russian Federation in Moscow but will return to his base in Barcelona, Spain ahead of his club's Spanish La Liga fixture next weekend against Leganes.

The goal by the Manchester City forward gave the South Americans a deserved win at Moscow's renovated 81,000-capacity Luzhniki stadium. "We made some mistakes in the first half but in the second we improved. I never said I didn't want Icardi in the national team, nor did I make anyone leave other players out", quoted Messi, as saying.

The coach singled out Aguero for his performance.

Aguero joined Hernan Crespo in third on the list of Argentina's all-time highest goalscorers with his effort, and Sampaoli was impressed with what he saw.

Taking a U-turn and returning to the Argentina team after retiring previous year has left Lionel Messi embarrassed, he admitted. "There was more vertical play with [Alejandro] Gomez next to [Angel] di Maria, interesting movements between Aguero and Messi, many movements on the wings", Sampaoli told reporters.

Messi nearly opened the scoring within three minutes of the restart but his chip over Akinfeev after a lovely throughball from Aguero was cleared by Konstantin Rausch with Salvio lurking behind.

After the interval Argentina continued to dominate possession and kept Russia's defence under constant pressure but failed to find the net before the 86th minute.
