Indira Gandhi remembered on 100th birth anniversary

A commemorative programme to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was held at her samadhi, Shakti Sthal.

BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday hailed his grandmother and former PM Indira Gandhi on her 100th birth anniversary saying she was a mother to this nation.

Other Gandhi family members, including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, also paid rich tributes to Indira Gandhi.

According to a statement issued by the trust on Saturday, the eve of Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary, Dr. Manmohan Singh was unanimously selected for the award by an global jury chaired by former president Pranab Mukherjee.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was an Indian stateswoman and central figure of the Indian National Congress.

"While Gandhi led the country with a socialist ideology, present Prime Minister Narendra Modi is treading a path where the only beneficiary is the corporates while the common man is finding it tough", Hassan said.

Former President Pranab Mukherjee said in her death, Indira left a message that "a commitment to the people can never be killed by any power, however strong it may be".

Known as the "Iron Lady", Gandhi was India's most powerful prime minister.
