After 13 players were missing from his last England squad, the former Middlesbrough boss has been hit with a series of withdrawals for the forthcoming games with Germany and Brazil, too.

Hodgson took Wilshere to the European Championship even though not fully fit and virtually guaranteed him a place in his midfield when he was not injured.

Wilshere was overlooked by England coach Gareth Southgate this week.

England boss Gareth Southgate has also warned the midfielder that he will not earn an worldwide recall unless he is playing regularly, meaning a likely Emirates Stadium exit in the eyes of Merson.

Southgate's rationale was the 25-year-old had not played enough Premier League football this season.

The Arsenal midfielder has been a regular in the team for Europa League and Carabao Cup fixtures but has made just two appearances in the Premier League. "That is not the way we are playing".

Wilshere has played only sparingly for Arsenal after recovering from an injury that cut short his loan spell at Bournemouth last season. When we have played with a 10, we have had Dele [Alli] and [Adam] Lallana. I am happy with where I am, playing-wise. You'd have to ask Arsene [Wenger] why that was.

"I work with [Director of Football] Dougie Freedman and we talk about potential players and Jack Wilshere's name has never been mentioned".

"I have got no idea about where the name of Jack Wilshere has come from, so where did you get it from?"

"Now you are telling me we have been linked with him, but by who?" Southgate holds him in high esteem but his slide down the Arsenal pecking order and the difference of opinion over his deployment means he may need a new club, a new position or both in January.
