Facing Historic Reddit Backlash, EA Cuts Cost of Star Wars Hero Unlocks

Our Star Wars: Battlefront II review-in-progress will go up today.

The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

Star Wars Battlefront II will be available worldwide on November 17, 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and on Origin for PC. After a user complained about the cost of unlocking Darth Vader in the upcoming game, EA's community team chose to try and smooth the situation over.

EA published a new blog post today announcing that after looking at fan feedback, the company will reduce the cost of unlocking some in-game heroes like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker from 60,000 to 15,000. In EA's last Battlefront game, back in 2015, there was no unlock criteria for heroes - though there was the small issue of a season pass, with a large number of characters reserved for those who'd ponied up the extra amount. One Redditor said, "The problem isn't that the heroes are locked, it's that you can skip the wait by throwing more money at it, making the wait not for accomplishments, but to entice people to pay for it".

Even 300,000 downvotes isn't enough to get EA to change while players-including the big spenders that the game industry calls "whales"-are still pouring money into the game". Now, the company's contrived excuse for Battlefront II's gameplay mechanics has become the most downvoted comment in Reddit's history. That's progression. However, gamers did the math and realized it would take 4o hours of gameplay to unlock Darth Vader, which is an unreasonable thing to ask of anyone who isn't a teenager with a holiday break on the horizon. "Making games great comes from regular tuning". Even though EA has tweaked this aspect since the backlash, players on Reddit are still complaining about paywalled features of the game. While I've enjoyed what I've played thus far in EA Access, the looming presence of its loot boxes blemish the overall presentation, and it now serves as a reminder that at their worst microtransactions aren't just unappetizing side dishes in a three-course meal - sometimes they spill out onto your dessert and make that taste a bit awful, too.

It adds that EA determined the in-game credit cost of heroes based on data from the open beta and more.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can. Asking players to grind for 10 hours to unlock their favorite characters is in the exact same spirit as asking them to grind for 40 hours.
