Chennai engineer dies after alleged stalker sets her, family on fire

In yet another shocking incident of a stalker turning killer, a young Chennai engineer was burnt alive late night on Monday allegedly by a former classmate who had been stalking her for about a month.

The deceased Induja's mother Renuka and younger sister Nivedita, who were trying to save her, are in hospital.

Akash went to her house and threatened the woman for setting himself on fire. He claimed to be in love with Indhuja but she turned down his advances, which angered him and he killed her.

Sinduja died after being admitted to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The mother has sustained 49 per cent burn injuries, while her daughter has 23 per cent.

Police said they detained the suspect, 23-year-old Akash, who was pursuing Induja against her wishes for almost a month. On Monday night, be came to their home and picked up a quarrel with her. When her parents started to look for groom for the victim, Akash got angry.

Aakash and Indhuja were classmates at an engineering college they had graduated from.

The accused, Aakash, absconded right after but was caught on Tuesday morning. This is when, the police say, the accused threw petrol on the victim and used a lighter to set her on fire.

Aakash claimed that he and the woman were in a relationship and they planned to marry, police officials said. Her father Shanmugam (48) is working in Dubai.

Hearing cries, neighbours rushed to help the family and took them to the hospital.

Reportedly, initially, they had an argument after which Aakash poured petrol on Indhuja.
