Charles Manson, the cult leader who sent followers known as the "Manson Family" out to commit gruesome murders, shattering the peace-and-love ethos of the 1960s hippie era in California, has been hospitalized, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"It's not going to get any better for him", a source told the outlet.

Manson, 83, was reportedly rushed to the local hospital for "various treatments", TMZ said. That hospital is 62 miles north of the California State Prison in Corcoran, where Manson has been serving a life sentence since 1971.

Manson was also hospitalized and then released back to prison in January of this year.

In the early hours of 9 August 1969, four members of the Manson Family broke into a house formerly occupied by a record producer who had snubbed aspiring musician Manson. Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski, was pregnant at the time of her death.

The next night, Watson and two female cult members tied up and stabbed Leon and Rosemary LaBianca to death in their Los Angeles home. He has been denied parole 12 times, the most recent time in 2012.
