Big pass plays help Georgia Tech close the deal

The junior linebacker was part of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 28-22 upset over No. 17 Virginia Tech on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

On its final possession, Virginia Tech converted a pair of fourth-down plays and faced third-and-1 at the Georgia Tech 32 with plenty of time to pull off the winning touchdown against a team that had lost three games by a total of six points. In fact, Marshall had just 64 yards rushing on 22 carries - and average of 2.9 yards per carry.

Georgia Tech (5-4, 4-3 ACC) broke a two-game losing streak, beat its first ranked team since knocking off the Hokies a year ago and pulled the Yellow Jackets to within one win of becoming eligible to play in a bowl game. I think we need to get back on track and win out those two games, then go find out our bowl and win our bowl game.

HISTORICAL TRENDS LIKE: Virginia Tech. Preston Parks was the star of the show in that one, scoring 21 points with seven rebounds and a 5-of-6 line from 3-point range. "We have been in the right place, but we were caught in poor leverage and they made us pay". The Hokies fell behind early again, fought back to take the lead, gave up too many big plays and still had a chance to win in the final minutes.

"My teammates gave me confidence", said Alexander-Walker. On third and 10, Jackson threw a jump ball off his back foot, and after being deflected multiple times, the ball landed in the hands of sophomore receiver Eric Kumah for a 26-yard gain.

WHO WE LIKE: Virginia Tech. The two-point conversion pass failed, leaving Georgia Tech with a 14-9 lead that remained until halftime.

The one time Georgia Tech did complete a pass in the first three quarters, it was a 60-yard touchdown. I thought we had a good call. Fans may not like the explanations, but they got answers from a guy who spent a week preparing for the Yellow Jackets and knows both them and his team the best. "We just didn't make the plays we needed to". Up next: Georgia Tech is on the road at Duke on Saturday.

NOTES: Georgia Tech got two defensive starters back from injury. Georgia Tech has allowed seven kickoff returns or 38 yards or longer.

Those missed points loomed large late in the game.

It's good to be at home: Georgia Tech has won eight straight home games, the fifth-longest streak in the nation.

Few people are talking about this particular play. "Watch our - we've played nine games, 10 games - we're not going to run up and down the field on anybody".
