Trump said NBC News was "fake news" after the broadcaster reported tension between the president and US Secretary of State Rex Rex Tillerson.

President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of NBC News, threatening to go after the network's broadcasting license.

Other officials at the meeting said they did not take Trump's wish for more weapons to be an instruction to build the numbers. "I've seen tremendously dishonest press".

During a joint meeting with Canadian Prime Minsiter Justin Trudeau at the White House Trump said that the current nuclear arsenal of the United States is already sufficient, and that no increase is needed.

"It seems to me he's reaching for excuses, reaching for ways to punish the media for stories he doesn't like", he stated.

During his election campaign, Trump said that Comcast's purchase of NBC "concentrated far too much power in one massive entity that is trying to tell the voters what to think and what to do".

"Recent reports that the president called for an increase in the USA nuclear arsenal are absolutely false", the Mattis statement said.

Responding to a question about Tillerson on Wednesday, Trump said "we have a very good relationship". "They have their sources that don't exist, in my opinion they don't exist". Officials told Trump that there are legal and practical reasons why the nations' nuclear weapons stockpile could not be increased, NBC sources said, later telling the network's reporting team that no expansion is planned.

He called the report "pure fiction" that was "made up to demean".

He continued, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?"

The NBC report comes during a time of high tension between the United States and North Korea over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programs, and just ahead of an expected announcement from Trump on whether to decertify the worldwide deal on Iran's nuclear programme. Bad for country!"Trump tweeted". I don't know, big guy, maybe after you finish suing the women who accused you of sexual misconduct - which should coincide with that lawsuit you threatened to file against the New York Times for daring to report on the women's accusations. USA news reports have painted the relationship between Trump and Tillerson as tense.
