Tillerson, in a hastily called news conference, refused to deny he referred to Trump as a "moron" but shot down the report that he came close to resigning.

In late July, Tillerson was in Texas while Trump addressed the Boy Scouts of America, and the secretary threatened not to return to Washington, according to the report.

Tillerson also sought to rebut a report that claimed Vice President Mike Pence had to talk him out of resigning.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sought to fend off inside-the-Beltway rumors and reports that he was ready to leave the State Department earlier this year.

Tillerson took questions from reporters after his statement, and was asked directly whether he ever called the president a "moron".

"What we have accomplished, we have accomplished as a team", Tillerson said, adding that he reaffirmed his "commitment to this role". "There's never been a consideration in my mind". US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on Tuesday also played down these reported tensions between Trump and Tillerson.

Tillerson used the press conference to praise Trump.

The announcement comes after NBC reported Wednesday morning that Tillerson was ready to resign this past summer over frustrations with the President.

'President Trump's foreign policy goals break the mould of what people traditionally think is achievable on behalf of our country, ' he said.

'NBC news is #FakeNews and more dishonest than even CNN, ' he tweeted.

For his part, Trump told reporters in Las Vegas that he has "total confidence" in his top diplomat.

Trump said over the weekend that he is not interested in negotiating with the Kim Jong-Un regime over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. He called the network a "disgrace to reporting" in another. "When I promise a cretin that I am going to do a job, I stay until the job is finished", he said.

However, Tillerson would not deny that he called Trump a "moron," per NBC News' reporting.

"He loves this country". He puts America and Americans first. "Accountability is one of the bedrock values the president and I share", Tillerson said.
