Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gujarat for a day-long visit today morning for inaugurating a slew of projects in Bhavnagar and Vadodra, the highlight being a ferry service from Ghogha in Bhavnagar district to Dahej in Bharuch.

This is the first of its kind project not only in India but also in South-East Asia. "This ferry service is likely to bring back those glory days of Bhavnagar coast".

During his last visit to Gujarat, PM Modi had called the ro-ro service a dream project, which he planned when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. "Our government chose to build the terminals and provide suitable infrastructure to private operators". "Tell me, do aircraft operators build airports or bus operators build roads?"

Modi had laid the foundation stone for the project in January 2012, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. Efforts were made to stall industries and Gujarat's growth.

The Prime Minister said that "samundra manthan" had led to the "dream project" being a reality.

The service - hanging fire since 1995 was first conceived in early 1960s. The ferry service can accommodate nearly 1000 passengers and 150 vehicles at the same time will cover the 8-10 hours long journey by road from Saurashtra to South Gujarat in just 30 minutes via the Gulf of Bay.

The state of the art vessel will have the capacity to carry about 70 trucks, 100 four-wheeler and about 500 passengers.

Many working in the diamond cutting and polishing hub of Surat in South Gujarat belong to the Saurashtra region and the service is expected to come as a boon for them.

The prime minister said he was happy to be in Gujarat and that the ferry service programme was of vital importance for the entire nation. The ferry services would not be restricted to one route. There are also ambitious plans to connect the state to Mumbai and other southern states by this link. "I am told that a pre-feasibility report for a similar project across Gulf of Kutch is ready", he said.

Prime Minister Modi also urged the people to explore opportunities in animal husbandry. "We seek to create a crore employment opportunities". From Dahej, he will leave for Vadodara, where he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 1,140 crore.
