This week is National Fire Prevention Week, a chance for people across the country to take a look at how prepared they are for the unimaginable.

Today the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management kicked off Fire Prevention Week 2017 with a timely reminder: "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!"

"They are affordable and can get you out of the home when your escape route is blocked", he said. Without a solid fire escape plan, you are putting your life and your family's lives in danger.

Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. Leduc Fire Services is hosting an open house at Fire House 1 on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

"There is no time to plan your escape after a fire starts". While ESFI works to raise awareness of the necessary precautions that can help eliminate electrical fire hazards, Siemens technology is at work every day to prevent fires and other catastrophic events in our living and working environments. "If you don't meet up together, you could think there is still someone in the fire and go back in, which could be catastrophic". Residents may have as little as two minutes, possibly less, to safely escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

Many people have fire extinguishers in their homes, but Forbush said people should not depend on them to put out anything more than basic kitchen fires. "You really need to have one of these in your home because it's the cheapest life insurance policy you're going to get".

Firefighters will be visiting Ocean City Elementary School on Wednesday to promote fire safety and fire prevention.

When a fire breaks out, timing is everything.

"Every month we talk to the kids about how they would get out if a fire would happen, trying to not scare them but make sure they have what they need so they can get out successfully if there were a fire", said Alisha.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been the official sponsor since the initiative began in 1922, which is on record as the longest running public health observance, according to their website.
