Collins said her mother was urging her to stay in the Senate. The work she does for ME - while rarely easy and often understated - is a reflection of her work ethic and her infinite energy to serve the people of our state.

The chairman of the Maine Democratic Party says Republican U.S. Sen. She said the "hands-on" part of the job, as well as spending more time in Maine, "very much appeals to me". As one of the few moderates in a closely divided Senate, she is often a swing vote, and, as she demonstrated during the health care debate, she can often influence the outcome of important legislation.

"I know Susan's decision to continue serving Maine in the Senate was not an easy one and, not surprisingly, her announcement today reflects her commitment to putting Maine people first". He characterizes the current crop of Republican gubernatorial candidates as "a field of far-right politicians" pushing "extreme policies". Garrett Paul Mason of Lisbon Falls, former Maine Department of Human Services Director Mary Mayhew of South China, and Deril Stubenrod of Clinton.

Collins has been in the Senate since 1996 and is in her fourth six-year term. Collins' family members, many of whom still live in her hometown of Caribou, said they were left in the dark regarding her decision.

Two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage can not run again because of term limits.

Collins has been a pivotal vote in the Senate this year on defeating Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Susan Collins, one of the few remaining centrist Republicans in the U.S. Senate, has chose to stay in that polarized body rather than run for governor of Maine.

LePage has repeatedly bashed Collins, declaring almost a year ago that "she's done in the Republican party" because she refused to support Trump last year. She also said she felt an affinity for Augusta, the capital, where a long line of ancestors served in the State Legislature, starting with her great-great grandfather and including her father.

The party primaries are in June and the general election is November 2018.

Ms. Collins made her announcement at a breakfast meeting here of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce.

LePage, whose combative style was a precursor of Donald Trump's approach to the presidency, has been a frequent critic of Collins, particularly when she attracted national attention as one of three Republican senators who in July voted against a Trump-backed bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
