French model Ines Rau becomes first transgender playmate

"Every woman's beauty deserves to be celebrated", the 26-year old told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

While Rau has appeared in the magazine in the past, she will get the full playmate treatment this time around, with a centerfold all to herself. Just as important, she's a tenacious advocate with no shortage of causes. The French model has seen plenty of wins in her blossoming career, such as a Balmain campaign, a spread in Vogue Italia and smiling with her eyes across the catwalk.

This is coincidentally the first issue to hit the newsstands since Hefner's death in September.

"I lived a long time without saying I was transgender", she revealed. Actually, the first was Caroline "Tula" Cossey in 1991, as tweeted directly Playboy today.

One Twitter user remarked: "I have a problem with people being transphobic and the irony of you being so judgemental is not lost on me".
