But the most striking statistic in the study results came from the 19 percent of women who had bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction, a procedure that offers little to no benefit for women at low risk for developing a second cancer. While this is the figure given to all women with a BRCA gene mutation, experts say that cancer risks are more complicated than that, and vary from person to person.

BRCA has been nicknamed the "Angelina Jolie gene" after the actress publicly revealed that she had undergone a mastectomy after learning that she was at 87% risk of developing breast cancer.

The study suggested the number of women with BRCA1 and 2 mutations who now choose to have a mastectomy could reduce by a third - from 50% to about 36%.

Many people believe clinical trials are used as a last resort for a person suffering not only from breast cancer but any cancer.

More than 15,000 people will be at Washington Park to spread messages of hope and victory of cancer.
