In some areas, Columbus Day simply doesn't hold as much meaning for the populace.

But Columbus' reputation is losing ground in multicultural America. It is not because they hate Italians or want to wipe away all vestiges of "white history", but rather it is because Columbus-who never even stepped foot in North America-represents a mangled, misinterpreted history, learned through songs and rhyming schemes.

New York City, for instance, will today host its 73rd annual Columbus Day parade on Fifth Ave., with 35,000 people marching and over 100 bands, floats and groups.

"Should we honor Christopher Columbus or should we honor the indigenous people". However, Native Americans reject the notion and condemn his atrocities towards indigenous peoples.

Numerous protesters call for cities and towns to adopt Indigenous People's Day.

Explaining the reasoning, Councilman Paul Lopez pointed to the Native American tribes of the Arapaho and Cheyenne, who used land on the site of what would eventually become the city.

"I have nothing against honoring Native Americans, of course", he said. Columbus Day is a day that we've chosen to celebrate who we are.

"It was established by Congress, and while other cities have chosen not to recognize it, technically it's still there".

"We gather during a teachable moment to discuss the ongoing impacts of that legacy and to commit ourselves to reversing them", the group said. Some places celebrate Columbus Day as a public holiday.

"There are a lot of inaccuracies in our history", Green said.

"That statue has to remain in Columbus Circle", State Senator Jeff Klein said.

President Trump apparently disagreed with Obama's contention that it is a history we must recognize.

If history is our guide, Columbus Day shouldn't be celebrated in the United States.

Is it time to say arrivederci to Christopher Columbus?

Columbus Day continues to be shrouded in controversy.

"We chose the name of Columbus, but our main focus is on our charitable work".

The resolution also supports the removal of the Columbus bust in Detroit, near the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Hawaii celebrates Discoverers' Day, which commemorates the Polynesian discoverers of those islands, while South Dakota celebrates Native American Day. In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a federal holiday after intense lobbying by a Catholic service organization consisting largely of Italian Americans, the Los Angeles Times reported. In 1970, the holiday was attached to the second Monday of October.

Statues of Columbus have been the target of vandals in recent weeks.

The Marist Poll surveyed 1,224 adults September 11-13, funded in partnership with the Knights of Columbus.
