'Blade Runner 2049' Struggles to $31.5 Million Opening Weekend

Even that expectation, it should be noted, was modest in the context of the film.

Though the movie easily won the domestic weekend box office with an estimated $31.5 million take, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it's a disappointing figure for a blockbuster that was on over 4,000 screens and a budget of $150 million (add another $100 million or so for the marketing).

Warner Bros.'s release of Blade Runner 2049 isn't getting October off to the kind of start September saw one month ago.

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto and Barkhad Abdi. Before the weekend, the most conservative tracking estimates had this film matching the $45 million opening earned in 2015 by "Mad Max: Fury Road".

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore, said: "The core of enthusiastic and loyal "Blade Runner" fans were over 25 and predominantly male, and propelled the film as expected to the top spot, but a lengthy running time and lesser interest among females made it tougher for the film to reach the original weekend box office projections".

Coming in at number two at the box office was Kate Winslet and Idris Elba's The Mountain Between Us, which brought in $10.1 million. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find former LAPD blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for the last three decades.

Despite strong advance ticket sales and glowing reviews from many critics, the movie made $12.7m on Thursday night and Friday, $11.4m on Saturday and a projected $7.4m on Sunday from just over 4,000 cinemas. The movie came in third this week with $9.6 million. It will close the weekend with $305 million domestically plus $298.8 million internationally to top the $600 million worldwide mark.

Not to say the movie will suddenly have a second life at the box office.
