The 72-year-old has been tipped to return for a fourth spell in charge of the Bundesliga champions after reportedly agreeing a contract until the end of the season.

Ancelotti's former assistant Willy Sagnol had been in charge of first-team affairs since the dismissal of the Italian.

Ancelotti left his role as coach at Bayern Munich last week after a 3-0 humbling at the hands of PSG in the Champions League - their biggest group-stage defeat in 21 years.

Ancelotti refused to be drawn on that, but confirmed his intention to take some time off.

However, maybe there is a reason for such a short-term appointment.

"I heard noises about Carlo Ancelotti coming in, but what's he going to do with that side?"

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel was among the favorites to take over.

One man who has been linked with the job - at least by the press - is Jurgen Klopp, who's thought to be happy to stay at Liverpool.

Heynckes, who also led Real Madrid to the UCL title and coached Benfica, Athletic Bilbao and a string of Bundesliga clubs, has not worked since 2013.

"From the beginning, he (Zidane) gave me a lot of confidence", he said, "and in his two years he's played me in almost every game, especially in the big games". His reputation should ensure that he has the immediate respect of everybody at the club.

Bayern Munich are set to announce Jupp Heynckes as their interim coach, according to reports in Germany.

Bayern have enjoyed a lacklustre start to their campaign so far.

But Hoffenheim's major backer Dietmar Hopp has also already acknowledged that a Bayern move would likely prove impossible to reject.
