"On today's date, a warrant was issued for Deandre Shakur Harris (B/M; 20 years of age; resident of Suffolk, Virginia) in relation to an assault that occurred on August 12th in the area of the East Market Street parking garage", police said.

The beating, which was captured on camera and quickly spiraled across the internet, occurred after a white supremacist tried to spear a counter-protester with a flag pole, the Washington Post reported in August.

Daniel Patrick Borden, 18, of Mason, Ohio, also is charged with malicious wounding in the Harris assault. A detective went to the magistrate and confirmed the victim's claims.

Zach Roberts, for Truthout, spoke with Lee Merritt, Harris's attorney and a legal specialist on police brutality and corruption.

A video of the beating shows a group of approximately six people converging on Harris before clubbing him with wooden sticks, and kicking and stomping him inside a downtown parking garage last August.

A magistrate judge, without talking to witness Roberts, issued a warrant, apparently on the complaint of lawyers for the white nationalists. The charge: malicious wounding.

A news release from the Charlottesville Police Department says the alleged victim, who was not identified, asked the local magistrate's office to review the incident, according to WVIR.

What was Harris's reaction to the warrant?

At a court hearing in September, Ramos's attorney said "it may have been Mr. Harris who struck the first blow in that fracas", according to the Daily Progress. Not only is [the victim] charged with a crime but he's charged at the same level as the men who broke his bones, who caused serious bodily injuries, caused him to get 18 staples in his head ... the men who beat him within an inch of his life. He said the attackers also broke his wrist, chipped his tooth and split open his lip.

One person involved in the brawl, who has not been identified by authorities, has now accused Harris of injuring him during the exchange. Ramos even stated, "There were some non-racist members who were going to a free speech rally".
