In a bid to compete with Reliance Jio's, rival Bharti Airtel on Wednesday announced the launch of a new smartphone in partnership with Karbonn Mobiles. Airtel has also said that it will be having partnerships with more manufacturers in the future to bring affordable 4G smartphones to the people. We are delighted to partner with Karbonn to remove barriers to smartphone adoption and enable millions of Indians to leapfrog to a full touchscreen smartphone experience.

Airtel India has partnered with Karbonn to launch a budget 4G VoLTE smartphone, and this also indicates that the network provider has stepped into the VoLTE segment. The dual-SIM phone runs Android Nougat software and is backed by a 1,400mAh battery.

Airtel said that the 4G phone - Karbonn A40 Indian, at a viable cost of Rs 1,399, will come packaged with a month to month revive pack of Rs 169. They would then have to make at least Rs 3000 worth of recharges for the first 18 months to get Rs 500 as cashback.

Jio's disruptive pricing has upended the telecom industry because of which profits of incumbents such as Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular Ltd (IDEA.NS) have shrunk rapidly. It also has dual-SIM support and offers complete access to all apps on Google Play Store, including popular apps such as WhatsApp, YouTube, and Facebook.

The major difference between these two offers is JioPhone is 4G feature phone, though capable of most smartphone functions, and Airtel's is a true smartphone, though with basic specifications.

Here's how it works: Customer initially makes a downpayment of Rs 2,899 for the phone after which it becomes their property. Whereas Airtel is offering its Rs 169 special plan only for the prepaid users.

Coming with the 4G VoLTE connectivity, the Karbonn A40 Indian has a quad-core processor, possibly from MediaTek and along with that is 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage.

However, if you don't like this bundled offer, one can go with any of the recharge plans, which should sum up to INR 3,000 in the first 18 months of the actual purchase. It has 5 megapixels rear camera with LED flash and VGA front camera. This cashback comes to your Airtel Payments bank and you don't need to return your device for cashback. After 18 months, the customer will be refunded a cash refund of 500 rupees, and 36 months for completion, the customer will get 1000 rupees back, out of Rs. 2899, Rs. 1500 will be refunded. 91mobiles broke the exclusive news last month that the device will be priced below Rs 2,000, and rightly so, as the first device that the telco is offering in partnership with Karbonn will cost you Rs 1,399, albeit with a catch.
