Passengers describe chaotic scenes as the youngster plunges 25-50ft from an upper floor of the atrium on the Carnival Glory.

Carnival Cruise Lines said the ship's command immediately contacted police after she fell and transported her to the ship's medical centre.

The Carnival Cruise Lines ship Carnival Glory had finished its voyage and docked at Port Miami when the child fell around 8:15 a.m., police said.

Miami-Dade police, which is handling the investigation, said "The ship has been turned over to Carnival Cruise Lines personnel to resume normal operations".

A witness, Raymond Kassim, told Fox News affiliate 7News Miami he heard someone cry out.

This is really hard to hear and we do hope she pulls through.

"It happened so fast". A retired emergency medical technician who was among the first to try and save the 8-year-old says the girl's injuries were severe. Those on board also alerted Miami-Dade police, she said. Miami Fire Rescue took the girl to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she died.

The family are understood to be from The Bahamas and had just completed a seven-day cruise. Our thoughts with the young girls family during this very hard time.
