This Mom Delivered Her Own Baby During Hurricane Irma

For those who did stay, many police stations and hospitals eventually announced that first responders would no longer be answering calls for help, with the rising water making it too risky for police and paramedics to venture out. It also coincided with her due date.

The woman was in her home in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood on Sunday right as Irma was starting to ramp up early in the morning and then she went into labor. Even Rush Limbaugh, the conservative talk show host, who lambasted the media for recommending that Florida residents evacuate ahead of the hurricane and has said climate change is a liberal hoax, left his Palm Beach home in south Florida and departed for "parts unknown".

Emergency workers and doctors couldn't get to the woman in time, so they coached her over the phone. When she called back at 5:35 am, she was ready to give birth.

So here's to strong moms everywhere - and congrats to the new mom and her baby! I think it's safe to say we have found a victor for new mom of the year.

On Saturday, the Miami-Dade Police Department shared a photo of "baby Nayiri Storm" - a newborn welcomed to the world hours before the category 3 storm's life-threatening 125 mph winds and 12-18 inch rainfall is expected to hit the 305.

"We weren't able to respond. The woman was doing good, too", Miami Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Pete Gomez said, adding that he did not know whether the woman was with someone while giving birth and how long the delivery call took. Dispatch told her how to tie it off. We made contact with the assistant medical director here.
