Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting became the first player to score against United this season when he netted twice for Stoke.

Hughes is understood to have again offered his hand, but it was ignored by Mourinho.

"There was a time he came into my technical box and I told him to get out but that was it. Maybe that was what upset him!"

"I prefer not to answer question about handshakes. It makes it look like it's my fault but that's not right", he said. United enjoyed the bulk of possession and had more opportunities yet it was far from one-way traffic.

Mourinho, though, refused to single out the England centre-back and suggested the 25-year-old may have been feeling the effects of playing twice during the worldwide break. "They defended a lot and it is becoming quite trendy in the Premier League, this way of defending now, but they did well and physically they were very strong and they probably deserved the point".

Stoke City captain Darren Fletcher has praised his team's performance during their 2-2 draw with former club Manchester United at the bet365 Stadium this evening.

He added: "I know after national teams there are no miracles, only fatigue, loss of concentration, so I am not disappointed, it's just a natural outcome, four matches, 10 points, top of the league, we are OK".

"Goodness knows, we had too many free-kicks against us, but that wasn't because we're a physical team, it was because the referee misinterpreted too many things in my view".
