Power has been restored at North Columbia Elementary School and that school will open again on Wednesday. More than 40 Hillsborough schools were used as shelters and the shelters may need to remain open for displaced families.

School officials thought it was good to postpone classes after Hurricane Irma forced many to evacuate from the Suncoast region and also caused widespread flooding and wind damage to homes in the area.

The Pinellas County school system has announced it will reopen for classes on Monday, Sept. 18.

It could be the end of tomorrow before staff has the full reports done. They are known in Florida as hurricane days. It is also working to update employees who will be needed to reopen.

"We are grateful that our school sustained minimal damage from the storm", offered Rick Kirschner, head of school, in an email to parents. "Please continue to be safe during the cleanup process and your travels home".
