'Simran' Review: Will Kangana latest film repeat the success of Queen?

Actual con woman Sandeep Kaur may feel affronted: if she is a normal woman that is.

Praful works in the housekeeping department of a five-star hotel in Atlanta and begrudgingly lives with her middle-aged parents in the suburbs. Apart from that, a LOT has gone wrong in the second half, which leads to a awful end. The viewer's elastic limit has always been reached anyway. Kangana has done full justice to her acting prowess while carrying on with her battle and hence accusing her of making noise to attract publicity lacks merit. The screening event saw the presence of the lead actress Kangana Ranaut, director Hansal Mehta, Rajkummar Rao, Anupam Kher, Aamir Ali with wife Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Patralekha, Pooja Hegde and others. At the baccarat table, with the rare touch of beginner's' luck, she wins a lot of money, but then she made a decision to get back to the casino to play again but minus the luck she loses everything whatever she was having. But a night in Las Vegas changes everything and she has no options left but to steal money. Only that the gambling dens there set off the more unsafe shades of misadventure in her.

Back home, Praful also loses her dream home as her loan is not passed, and her father does not oblige her (for the first time, we see an Indian family, that too, Gujaratis, who are living in the USA but are not well-off!). And yes, you should brush up on your knowledge about her latest controversies, just to add a little spice! And what happens next? The soul-soothing numbers are one of the main pros to the film. Be it Simran's fun-filled everyday chores, the rather comical bank robberies or her personal turmoil - none of it is established properly or carried forth in a consistent manner. That, too, has a laughable explanation! As the idea behind the title of this film SIMRAN demands an extra dose of patience, tolerance and imagination, Hansal Mehta had an interesting badass women robber - the bombshell bandit to churn into an intriguing piece of cinema like his previous SHAHID and ALIGARH which were based on characters from real life but this time in order to turn a bit quirky it turned murky resulting in a lost bet. Why is she then called Simran?

Simran is worth watching for the honesty of its effort, but pack oodles of patience before you end up at the theatre. On technical front, Anuj Rakesh Dhawan's cinematography is eye pleasing. The editing (Antara Lahiri) is totally flaccid, but honestly, the shortfall is really in the earlier two legs of three-legged filmmaking stool-the writing and direction, not on this last one. Sachin-Jigar's music is quite routine.

What I enjoyed most about this film is that it has no pretensions to largeness, nor does it make any effort to lionise or romanticise Praful or her life. "Though this will make you laugh your heart out". And yet, she brings a freshness to a "been there, done that character" with her brilliant performance. The rest are just alright. We wonder what Hrithik and Karan will have to say about that, though. She was sentenced to 66 months in April 2015.

"I ate at that table. Then it all just went down the drain", she told BBC. However, there are occasions when even she gets carried away with the constant focus.
