Russell Westbrook Signs Biggest Deal in Jordan History

Westbrook reigns over names like Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Blake Griffin as the best of the best for the Nike subsidiary.

The Thunder star averaged a triple-double-a first in the National Basketball Association since Oscar Robertson did it in 1962-with 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists in leading OKC to the playoffs even with the departure of Kevin Durant.

Westbrook just returned from a multi city tour of China where he promoted the new Air Jordan model - Air Jordan XXXII.

Rather than invest resources into designing, developing and marketing another possibly short-lived signature line, Jordan Brand wanted to first ensure that Westbrook would be with the company for the long haul.

Many have tried and failed. That circumstance changes immediately with this deal. Stay tuned for upcoming Westbrook x Jordan products. The original Jordan series - specifically the Jordans worn throughout MJ's playing career - have been big sellers for the brand and, by extension, Nike. "I think it's a really good match", said Matt Powell, VP and sports industry analyst with The NPD Group. The brand needed to be reinvigorated. He's an explosive, mean, and tough player who literally does everything for his team on the court. It is anticipated Westbrook's on court shoe will be something unlike Jordan has ever made. The deal will also reportedly include a signature on-court shoe for Westbrook and will provide him opportunities to develop off-the-court merchandise. Rather than get humiliated by the Oklahoma City Thunder star in a real one-on-one showdown, Fallon challenged the newly minted MVP to NBA Jam.

Westbrook initially signed a five-year contract with Jordan Brand in 2013, and after the last couple of years he has had, Jordan Brand knew they had to lock him up while they could. While the dollar amount hasn't been reported, the deal is likely to be extremely lucrative.

The accomplished athlete is the face of Jordan Brand's initiatives to promote the Air Jordan XXXII, which arrives in stores on September 23. The Thunder offered the reigning MVP a five-year, maximum deal July 1.

This is not the only extension possibility that was part of Westbrook's summer.

We won't even begin to try to speculate on what's going through Westbrook's mind right now.

That factor cuts both ways.

Congrats to Russ on his new mind-blowing deal.

The Jordan deal might not make a difference one way or another, but it's certainly something Westbrook will consider when making his decision. Especially now that he has firmly taken over the reigns of the Thunder as it's leader.
