It will also be the third time they have played the Red Sox on Opening Day, following April 7, 2009 (a 5-3 loss) and 2003. For the second time in two weeks, Major League Baseball opted to move a series in order to avoid a potential weather disaster, this time ahead of a storm tabbed to be one of the biggest and deadliest in American history.

While there is plenty at stake in the standings - certainly more than on April 15, 1998, when the Yankees hosted Collins' Anaheim Angels at Shea Stadium after a 500-pound beam fell at Yankee Stadium - Odorizzi acknowledged it would be hard to concentrate after the Tampa area was hammered by Hurricane Irma. And so it is, the series at Citi Field will be played with a heavy heart for all the Patriots in Florida. Gray has a 3.39 ERA in 10 road starts. Gray earned the win last Thursday when he allowed an unearned run over 5 2/3 innings as the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-1.

"It's not the most ideal situation, but it's definitely not the worst", said Rays ace Chris Archer.

Opening a stretch that has 17 of their final 20 games in NY, the Yankees closed within three games of Boston in the AL East and opened a four-game lead over Minnesota for the top AL wild card.

"Each game is so precious for us", Snell said. "But if we go on a streak, with all the teams that are grouped in here, and went on a good run against the teams we're playing, we're going to find ourselves in an OK spot". But instead of cheers, they got a deluge of boos; applause was saved for the Yankees, who even got the traditional Yankee Stadium roll call in the bottom of the first.

However, Mets manager Terry Collins knows it won't be as odd for the teams, particularly the Rays, as it was the last time the Mets' home stadium hosted a Yankees game.

Aaron Judge walked leading off the fourth for the Yankees, went to third on Gary Sanchez's single - New York's first hit - and scored on Didi Gregorius' sacrifice fly.

In 1998 Terry Collins and the Angels had a road game against the Yankees relocated to Shea Stadium after a beam fell at Yankee Stadium

"I told Ellsbury we're going to take a picture and send it to Pete and say, 'This record is his, you can't have this one, '" Frazier said with a grin.

The Yankees play 14 of their final 19 at home. "You get a family skate and a practice the day before to soak in the (atmosphere) the day before, and you just take in the (weather) conditions as it is".

"This time of year, you need to win series", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after NY took two of three from the Rangers.

Before the game, Girardi tried to soften the idea that the Yankees could have a home-field advantage in Queens. A few Rays fans did make the trek, but they were scattered-individual navy blue islands amid a sea of gray and white. His family, down near Fort Lauderdale in the southeast tip of the state, escaped the storm unharmed despite cataclysmic predictions.

"It felt a little weird, for sure", Gray said. "But I thought the fans were great".

There was a message for hurricane relief shown on the videoboard.
