Rams Take on 49ers: What to Watch

Now set to host the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, tickets are going for as cheap as $14 for the game. The running game is still a work in progress (72.5 ypg), and Sammy Watkins has yet to emerge as the No. 1 receiver as expected.

For good reason. The 49ers have lost 16 of their past 18 regular season games since the start of the 2016 campaign.

While they are weak against the run, the 49ers have the seventh-best passing defence through two weeks, managing to hold Cam Newton and Russell Wilson to 352 combined passing yards and a 57.8 completion percentage. He missed training camp and the entire preseason recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in late July. "We all have to - you know, especially starting with me - just go out and execute a lot better". While the Rams were 4-12 last season, both of 2-14 San Francisco's wins came at the Rams' expense. It showed in the first two games of 2017 as he completed 36 of 54 passes for 530 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The 49ers gained 159 yards rushing in Week 2, as both Carlos Hyde and Matt Breida averaged over eight yards per carry. Perhaps that is to be expected against a defense that ranked last in the National Football League against the run last season.

The Niners meanwhile are coming off a loss against the Seahawks in Seattle last weekend in a game they very well should have won, but that to me says more about the struggles the Seahawks have been having on offense than it does about the strength of this Niners group. Goff had a breakout game in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts and was solid in Week 2. But for now Goff is obviously more comfortable throwing to rookie Cooper Kupp (seven receptions on 12 targets for 109 yards and a touchdown). He looks more like the record-setting Golden Bear than the scared rookie, moving more naturally in the pocket and featuring all of his pass-catching options.

The Rams will need to play much better against the run than they did in Week 2. He has done the same almost every time he has been queried about the difference between his rookie season under former coach Jeff Fisher's staff and this season under first-year coach Sean McVay. Unfortunately, Jared Goff threw an interception sealing the fate of a loss for the LA Rams. The 49ers' offense has been just terrible.
