The League Cup is less prestigious than the other three major trophies available to United this season, but Mourinho was happy to benefit from it last term when it became his first piece of significant silverware at the club.

Marcus Rashford sparkled during his hour-long performance, and man-of-the-match Martial may well have staked a claim to start United's next match in the Premier League against Southampton at the weekend.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has said Luke Shaw needs to "improve" if he wants a place in his starting eleven.

"He's a happy guy, he's working extremely well", the Portuguese tactician reiterated.

The Southampton defense, however, will be most hyped in this match as Virgil Van Dijk is likely to make his first start for the Saints since January. We won the Champions League match, we won a cup match, so if we manage to change so many draws of last season to victories, it would be great.

Martial is now battling Marcus Rashford for playing time, but he seems to be thriving in the position battle, as he's scored four goals already across all competitions.

"The next round, if somebody is better than us and they beat us... then okay, we're finished".

Mourinho was pleased with Martial display against Burton after demanding more of him last season, saying, "Anthony Martial wanted to do things".

"He's improving a lot", Mourinho said.

This season Martial has made only one start in the league, but has proved impactful off the bench in United's other four games and also caught the eye in Wednesday's EFL Cup win over Burton Albion, netting his fourth effort of the campaign.

Romelu Lukaku is another set to come in having been an unused substitute in the middle of a week when supporters' controversial chant about the United striker made ripples.

"I just want to win the game", Mourinho told Talksport. I think it's a good team to be a manager of. It's a good team to be a manager. A win on Saturday would see the visitors reach their highest Premier League points tally after six games (16). "You saw the game [against Burton], you saw the same as I see".
