Nintendo Switch online update makes voice chat slightly less terrible

The Nintendo Switch Online App is now available for Android and Apple iOS devices. Android users will also see "improved support for Bluetooth devices", but beyond that, the focus of this update is improving the voice chatting experience. You couldn't run the app in the background or lock your screen, meaning your phone's display needed to be on and the app needed to be open in order to keep chatting.

Voice chat will now continue during sleep mode. Nintendo Switch Online finally brought voice chat to Splatoon 2 players everywhere, but there was one small problem: You had to keep your phone awake and on the app for voice chat to stay live.

The paid service will encompass online play, the voice chat app, eShop deals, and a Virtual Console library of retro games with added online multiplayer. While the only other entry in version 1.1.0's update list is bug fixes, the other two are likely big enough to make the app relatively enjoyable to use.

Note: On devices using Android 6.0 or later, voice chat can not be used during sleep mode while power-saving features are activated.

The Switch's mobile companion app launched back in July and it is fair to say we were less than impressed by its capabilities.
