Mnuchin: I had no interest in eclipse because 'I'm a New Yorker'

Mnuchin told Politico the Treasury Department considered lending him the government plane so he'd have access to "secure communications channels" while overseas, not so he'd get a trip on the government's dime.

Mnuchin's office has also strongly denied that the secretary's opportunity to watch the solar eclipse within the so-called "path of totality" factored into his decision to visit Kentucky at that time, which included meetings on tax reform and a tour of Fort Knox.

"I've never asked the government to pay for my personal travel, and this was purely about alternatives of how I'd be able to be involved for national security".

Mnuchin said that he canceled his request for the plane after he found another solution for accessing secure communications.

President Donald Trump is calling Mnuchin a "straight shooter" and saying he has total confidence in him following a report that Mnuchin's use of government planes is being investigated by the Treasury Department's inspector general.

Steven Mnuchin, left, and his wife Louise Linton traveled to Kentucky in August during the solar eclipse.

Treasury officials have defended the day-long jaunt as "official government travel" and dismissed the suggestion that it was planned specifically to coincide with the celestial event. "Really? I don't have any interest in watching the eclipse". "This was one of the things we explored".

After the Yale alumni told Mr. Mnuchin that he had a moral obligation to quit Mr. Trump's cabinet, Mr. Mnuchin issued a statement denouncing hate, defending the president and refusing to quit. A commenter snarked at her for the trip.

The Kentucky trip sparked controversy after Mnuchin's wife posted a photo on Instagram that showed Mnuchin and Linton stepping off the government jet.

Louise Linton was criticized for shaming an OR woman after an Instagram post.

"Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you'd be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours", Linton wrote back.
